I cant remember anymore strenghts but Im sure Ill discover more in time. The system looks great, sounds great, and so far I'm very impressed. Make sure you shop around on the internet though as prices are coming down all the time.

I have been in contact with Sony about buying either a bigger subwoofer, or a bigger amp - but nothing will work straight forward. Seems I will have to live with it now... Just purchased the DAVS 550 all is well with the system. The only problem i have is receiving black and white picture whilst using a svhs - scart lead, so i am using the yellow composite supplied. The DAVS has two video channels, have you tried them both? I've done the same thing with my Nokia digibox, stereo L/R to L/R on Video 1 of the DAVS and it works fine.
Unless your a game fan you might not of heard about the new format. Dolby Pro Logic II allows for a standard stereo input to be plugged in to give full 5.1 Surround sound! Obviously there is one small catch that the bass level is very low!

As you know the picture is not as crisp as it would be with the RGB connection. Might not be a huge help but I've got my 550 connected to a 30" LCD panel using the component video connections and it seems to work fine. This is my first experience of a surround sound system, and I must say that I am reasonably impressed with it. I paid £300 from Richer Sounds for my Multi-Region Sony DAVS550.

Sony DAV-S500 Home Theater System
Have you ever seen the difference between composite and RGB/S-Video for a games console? The non-composite picture is orders of magnitude sharper and more vibrant. I've got the switch on the back set to progressive which seems to work fine (it switches back to interlaced automatically for PAL DVD's which is quite annoying).
Also It is almost double the power of the w pc as opposed to 30wpc with the 300 but you wouldn't know it .. You have to put the volume much higher with the 550. It takes an eternity to load discs, and some come with the subtitles showing which is hacking me off, and the glow in the dark remote .. So all in I feel like I've wasted my money. Contacting my dealer this week to see about upgrading to the 880. I'm pretty happy with the Sony DAVS550 home cinema system.
If it ever gets hung in manual mode you're screwed. Also, the dual remote isn't compatible with my 25 inch Sony TV monitor. This will be my last Sony purchase ever. PROTECT or PROTECTOR is flashing in the display of the home audio device.
But it shows how the Dolby Labs are thinking of new ideas. So far only the New Nintendo GameCube is the only piece of equipment to take onboard this new piece of technology. The 550 builds on the older model with a more stylish setup and the additional support of CD-R, CD-RW, VCD's and SVCD! So at least Sony are hearing what we all want! It worked fine for over a year before playing up. If I had connected the speakers incorrectly dont you think I might have noticed it not working before. My left speaker also works intermittently, and shall try the soldering solution. Did everyone who had the "left speaker problem" find that it was fixed by resoldering? My DAV-S800 has just started playing up with this exact problem, and I'm a tad nervous about taking it to bits.
I would have needed to purchase a separate multi channel receiver, DVD player and 5 satellite speakers and subwoofer. The Sony sounded much better in store than similar systems offered by other manufacturer''s and it offered multi channel SACD. The system, correctly set up with the optional wall brackets and speaker stands, is surprisingly good. DTS appears to offer better sound than dolby digital. The subwoofer works really well providing excellent low frequency rumbles and effects. The satellites are well designed and offer sparkling sound on movies.
The system feels like it should go louder, but it doesn't and there it is. I've not got a PS2, so don't know if i'm helping here. If so you may have to access this to get the correct info sent down the optical cable. Just for the record, I too have a problem with the front left channel after two years of operation. Amazing that it is that same channel on every system.
Yes thanks Nick, I tried the re-soldering 3 weeks ago and my left speaker now seems to be working fine. I'm not sure if the gentleman from Glasgow understands that no brand is perfect and to blindly push a brands name serves no positive purpose to anyone. Anybody in 'the know' these days understands that Sony are no longer what they used to be in the build quality department. Very interesting to hear all these comments on the left-speaker issue, as I thought it was only my problem cables. Before I make things worse by taking the unit apart, how easy is it to take the circuit board out and re-solder? Otherwise I will bite the bullet and take it to a repair shop.
Overall the product was very good it would of been a little more helpful if we had the connection that is needed for the speakers and maybe the instructions.
