I found that the five 80W speakers does a pretty good job at giving out the bass, where as some other home entertainment system doesn't . I tested the clarity and the blast, both were exceptionally good. You can still hear people talking clearly behind explosion, where as many other system I tested couldn't. You don't get those squashed sound from some other systems. Overall, I'm quite happy with this system. Have you tried sticking it in a corner, or at least close to a wall?
In equal volume mode, we've made the loudness of each speaker about the same. This gives you a more direct comparison of subtle voicing differences between speakers. The connector unit is soldered to the circuit board and also bolted to the back of the unit. The repeated expansion/contraction of the case in that area, which gets very hot, simply wiggles the connections until they start to come away. Remarkably consistent, in that it takes almost exactly a year to break one of the joints. I went out and bought a Sony TV, surround sound system and a VCR.
Remote looks cool but its not set up very well. $600 price tag is kinda steep, $400 or less its a steal. Connections, it uses a reverse pin system instead of plugging in the tips of wire that plugs in like on speakers. Only 1 optical input and no coaxial input. Monitor Audio Ltd is a British owned and managed global specialist in hi-fi loudspeaker design. It turned out to be a scart input problem causing me to receive black and white pictures using scart to s-vhs connection.

I don't know if I was just lucky or not but it has been working fine since. I'm not sure if it will help or not but I left the screws at the back a little loose to allow for the metal to expand when it heats up so this doesn't happen again. When I contacted Sony Canada they said that they did not have any information about others experiencing this problem. Seems like there is some dodgy connection. I expected more from Sony products as they were regarded as the most reliable brand. However, I now find myself questioning why Sony products remain more expensive than equivalent spec products when their reliability is so poor.
If it ever gets hung in manual mode you're screwed. Also, the dual remote isn't compatible with my 25 inch Sony TV monitor. This will be my last Sony purchase ever. PROTECT or PROTECTOR is flashing in the display of the home audio device.

WOW this is a huge step up from Pro Logic! I have a mid sized room, the sound fills the air from all directions. I was going to buy Sony model HTD-DW830 for $399.99 but decided to hold out for a week because Circuit City was having a sell, Im sure am glad I did. The DAV-S500 doesnt have as much power as HTD-DW830 but the features more than make up for it. I dont think I would have payed the MSRP of $699.99 its a little out of my range. The sound is crisp and clear especially coming from a digital signal.
In addition, the radio tuner offers 20 FM and 10 AM presets for the user to easily play his or her favorite stations. The rear panel on the Sony Home Theater System receiver and DVD is equipped with video in and out connections, as well as audio connections for quick and easy access. The DVD player is also designed with two slow-motion speeds and three fast-scan speeds for a variety of viewing options. This Sony Home Theater System is a complete home entertainment center in a box and brings a stylish flair to any room with its sleek design.

Last year, Sony's DAV-S300 "Dream System" hit the bull's-eye by offering an easy, all-in-one approach to home theater. Building on that success, Sony's new DVD Dream Systems remain simple to buy and use, while delivering even greater power and performance. No brackets for wall mounting available anywhere on the web or at stores.

I have been in contact with Sony about buying either a bigger subwoofer, or a bigger amp - but nothing will work straight forward. Seems I will have to live with it now... Just purchased the DAVS 550 all is well with the system. The only problem i have is receiving black and white picture whilst using a svhs - scart lead, so i am using the yellow composite supplied. The DAVS has two video channels, have you tried them both? I've done the same thing with my Nokia digibox, stereo L/R to L/R on Video 1 of the DAVS and it works fine.
Have you got a cable that connects the component out signals to a scart plug? If so does your TV actually accept component video through a scart? Also some televisions have different connections on each of their scart sockets so you might have to try a different socket on the TV.

The overall quality for less than $400 is outstanding. I have spent over $3000 on my system which includes a Harman Kardon AVR 65 receiver, velodyne sub, and Infinity center, front, and rear speakers. The Sony DAV-S500 home entertainment system with DVD player and 5.1-channel surround sound is designed with simplicity in mind. This Sony Home Theater System supports DVD and Super Audio CD formats and uses Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic decoding.
I had turned the unit over and over in many, many ways just to get the damn cover off. I always thought that you can do that with consumer electronics, provided that you have disconnected it . Turns out that some of the cogs in the player assembly are kept on their little axles by gravity alone. So they dropped off and rattled around. By the time I figured out what was going on the optical bits had been damaged. I love the Sony DAV-S550 DVD home cinema system.
But it shows how the Dolby Labs are thinking of new ideas. So far only the New Nintendo GameCube is the only piece of equipment to take onboard this new piece of technology. The 550 builds on the older model with a more stylish setup and the additional support of CD-R, CD-RW, VCD's and SVCD! So at least Sony are hearing what we all want! Rumours are out that you can enter a password on the remote to unlock the region coding. After reading all your comments...and the issues with the Bass!
You can save yourself some money too by buying the speaker wall brackets from Currys a deal at only 12.99 per pair in silver. I am in the process of buying this system after readingf the reviews, however I have one question. Bought the Sony dav s 550 recently, from , which is offering good dealsat the moment. Never had DVD before, but the package of good quality, the package looks extremely stylish in my living room and I am a happy customer.
Control your music with one simple app, and fill your home with pure, immersive sound. PUSH POWER / PROTECT / PROTECTOR is flashing in the display of the home audio device. Get a video/aux lead and put in your headphone socket on your tv. Put the other end into the spare audio holes in the back of the system and set the function to 'video 2' function. Having just received the DAVS550 and never having had a full surrond sound system before, the sound quality and effects are awsome! No complaints about the product as yet.
